SISTER MARY TERESITA RIVET, O.S.U.

Sister Mary Teresita Rivet, O.S.U. was born Inez Marie Rivet on June 27, 1920, in New Orleans, LA. She graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1936, and enrolled in the College until she entered the Ursuline Convent on January 15, 1939 at the age of 19. On July 16, 1941, she professed her vows, making her final profession in New Orleans in 1944. Her religious name and dedication was Mary Teresita of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This past January, Sr. Teresita celebrated her 76th year as an Ursuline Sister.

Sister Teresita earned a B.A. degree from Saint Louis University in 1945, an M.A. degree from Catholic University of America in 1957, and in 1973, she completed certification at Tulane University as a reading specialist. This training led her to many Ursuline ministry assignments as a teacher, a principal, a prioress ... a leader.

Soeur T, as she was lovingly named by her young French students, served as Elementary School Teacher and Principal; Supervisor for the Central Province Ursuline Schools and the Dallas/Fort Worth Diocese Schools; Prioress of the New Orleans Ursulines Community; Provincial for the Ursulines of the Western Province; Missionary at Saint Mary's in Alaska; creator and first Director of the Ursuline Child Care Learning Center in Crystal City, MO in 1985.

Her kind, loving and winning nature led to valued relationships with her Ursuline Sisters, the clergy, her students, parents and her dear fellow alumnae. Countless will also remember her serving as the Ursuline Academy Mission Day Doll Contest and Cash Raffle Coordinator, as well as, the Ursuline Christmas Boutique Coordinator for many years.

Her final positions at Ursuline Academy in New Orleans were as the Early Childhood Division French Teacher, as well as, the Sacristan and Wedding Coordinator for the National Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor.

In 2007, ill health prompted Sister Teresita's move to live in retirement at the Ursuline Queen of Peace Community in Alton, Illinois. Sister was able to return to the Academy for a visit in 2010 as the specially honored guest at the dedication of the newly completed, state-of-the-art Soeur Teresita Rivet, O.S.U. Early Childhood Learning Center.

In May 2014, Sister Teresita, once again, joyfully returned to her beloved New Orleans to reside at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center, where she received wonderful care and visits from her many family members and friends during the last months of her life.

Sister Teresita Rivet died peacefully on March 19, 2015. The daughter of Maurice Joseph Rivet and Inez Jung Rivet, she was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Maurice Joseph Rivet, Jr., and two sisters, Marjorie Marie Rivet Cambre and Doris Marie Rivet Macgowan. She is survived by two sisters, Marie-Louise Rivet Morris and Janet Marie Rivet Anderson and many devoted nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 10 a.m., with Visitation beginning at 9 a.m. in the National Shrine of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, 2701 State Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, 70118.
